Editing tools

When we have written several drafts, we need to edit our text. Here are some basic questions on editing and proofreading. The answers below are guidelines only.

  1. What editing tool in Word do you use to review your text?
  2. What online tool do you use to check your grammar, punctuation and spelling?
  3. How do you check your layout?
  4. When using AI tools, how can you be successful in your prompts?
  5. How do you check you have followed the correct language style (US or UK)?

Possible answers

  1. Microsoft Word editing tools: spelling and grammar.
  2. A tool such as Grammarly, ProWritingAid, Quillbot, or Wordtune.
  3. AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) to help with layout, improving phrasing and eliminating grammar errors.
  4. Give specific prompts, in particular with capitalization of headings, UK spelling style and any other particularities you might need to add. Include intended audience, tone (level of formality) and other helpful ideas. Ask AI not to invent.
  5. Check that your language is set in Word for “English (UK)”.
