Many people worry about the ethical use of AI and when to declare such use. This is a quickly changing field, so I will discuss it from the current perspective. Is your text AI-generated or AI-assisted? Therein lies the difference.
If your work is AI-generated, then you should declare it if you publish it or use it for an assignment, while AI-assisted is considered everyday use to assist you in your writing.
Amazon have helpful indications on these two terms.
What is the difference?
AI-generated usually refers to text, images or translations that were entirely created by an AI tool, while AI-assisted content is created by a human writer, even if AI tools were used for editing, refinement or brainstorming.
If you write a text and then use Grammarly or ChatGPT to correct any errors and help with the layout, then it is AI-assisted.
If you
ask ChatGPT to help you with a framework for a report or other document, or to help brainstorm aspects to include, this is also considered AI-assisted.
If you ask ChatGPT to write the document for you, then it is AI-generated.
The best way to ensure that you have an AI-assisted text is to write the first draft yourself before asking AI for assistance. That way you retain control over your writing. Asking AI to assist with brainstorming can be useful too and make you think of aspects you perhaps hadn’t considered.
